I have a few questions chaps...
« on: October 24, 2008, 04:41:05 AM »
Guys,

I have been going over and over in my head how to break this to you. Frankly im concerned, i almost feel like the horrible older brother telling his kid sister that Santa doesn't exist (you knew this... right?).

I just don't know how to say it, so i'll just go ahead and say it. The world is round, thats right, i said it. Its not flat, its round.

Im really hoping that some of you nut jobs can help answer some questions for me. Honestly, i cannot fathom how you chaps figure the earth is flat. This being said, im sure you come across a lot of people who don't always believe, so providing you can actually tell me why the earth is flat, we should have a decent discussion here.

How do you guys explain the Horizon? Meaning that the surface that one is observing from is not an infinite plane. On the clearest of days, the only restriction to one's range of sight is the horizon. There can be two explanations for this - one, that the Earth at some point just stops, as if you were looking off the edge of a table (by the way, that means that when something disappears off the Horizon, it kinda just falls off into space, lol). The other is that the Earth is round.

Further proof of the Earth being round came after the voyage of Columbus. When Newton discovered and measured the force of gravity, that number could then be tested anywhere the theory was known. Since the force of gravity is roughly the same everywhere on the globe, it could be surmised that the Earth must be spherical. If the Earth were not round, whole hemispheres would have different atmospheric pressure and significantly different sea levels. Also, pictures taken of the Earth in the last 50 years have proved absolutely conclusively that the Earth is round. These are just the arguments that don't require much physics knowledge to explain, there are others that are more technical, but I think that the simplest arguments are the best.

Ok, so im thinking you're still not convinced. So, how exactly do you explain all the photos of the earth, taken from space? I guess someone photoshopped them all, good old Nasa, back in the 60's firing up their copy of Adobe Photoshop "this will convince them, what we'll do, is just use the circle tool and pretend the earth is round, ha.. success!".

Seriously... video... pictures.. the fact that people have visited space and have seen the round earth.

You can also observe, with binoculars, ships slowly 'sinking' below the horizon as it sails farther and farther out to the ocean, then watch them come back. They certainly didn't fall off the edge of the earth! You can also sail or fly around the world.

Guys honestly, how on earth (excuse the pun) would something orbit a flat plain? You realise the tides wouldnt work they way they do now, actually.. you realise gravity wouldnt quite work.. right?

Heres another one for you... when we have a lunar eclipse, the earth casts a shadow on the moon. The shadow is, go on... i'll let you answer this one... oh go on, please... its... ROUND.

Honestly people, what the hell.

I await your detailed, factual answers accompanied by evidence. For example... a photo of the flat earth would be just dandy. If someone can go ahead and get one for me that'd be awesome.

Thanks guys.

 :)

Aarron,

I think their ideas are nutty too. However, I do have one big sympathy with them... read the FAQs, and read through a few threads. I think that they are bunkum, but it doesn't do anyone any good, them or us to keep covering the same thing again and again.  I read masses here before posting, and I am still sure most I post has been covered.

As they said, "Lurk Moar" LOL

You seem to be confused chaps.

I want someone, to actually come back and give me a decent reply, in direct reply to the points i made. Are any of you able to show me a picture of this "flat earth"?

Its rather predictable that you should be replying this way.

Well, in fact no, we can use your picture. Which does show the curvature of earth. I can give you a few other photos to show the curvature of earth too if you'd like me to.

What exactly is it that makes you think the world is flat?

I dont think it is. Its not really narcs style. Even his most sophisticated alts are easy to identify.

Edit:

Well, in fact no, we can use your picture. Which does show the curvature of earth.

It does? You must be living on a very, very small planet if that picture shows curvature.

I can show you plenty more pictures which show a flat earth if you would like me to.

Starting out a post by basically saying 'you are all a bunch of retards' and then expecting a rational discussion to follow is idiotic.

Discussed hundreds of times. Do a search and find something specific you want to debate.  No one is going to respond to a vague question like 'explain ____'

Come on people this is the debate and discussion section of the forum, so debate and discuss.
Dont just say read more lol  :-\  thats not helpfull.

I happen to think Aaron has some very valid points.
One thing I would like to add, if the whole earth was made up of land (no water) if I was to get a car and drive in one contstant direction would I or would I not at some point end up at the same location, travel in a complete "circle" or would I just fall off into space?

Also could some give me the latitude and longitude of the "edge" of the earth I want to have a look at it on google earth. Cant say ive seen it before, and I would be interested to have a look.

Thanks

Chaps, honestly lol, not a single one of you has given me a decent reply yet. Im hoping that someone can prove to me that the world is flat. Instead of just quoting me and saying stuff like "its in a sticky, we've discussed this before". This is a DISCUSSION forum, so discuss it, come up with some kind of educated reply.

Or do you all believe the world is round? As proved?

Hey guys, I'm new to this - so I've just read the FAQ.

I'm curious about all this stuff, but not sure whether I buy it really. Nevertheless, I keep an open mind on such matters.

My question is this:

In your FAQ it poses a question about what happens to the water - responded saying that there are 50 thousand feet ice walls stopping the water 'falling off' (for want of a better expression).

My question is, if the world is flat - why can't I see these walls?

What's not helpful is people ignoring all the 'please read this before posting' notes and not even doing a quick search to see if there is a thread on their question.  As Robbyj pointed out, AaronP said nothing that hasn't be discussed to death already - if he wanted to reignite a debate on a particular topic then he should either start a new thread, keeping it short and to the point, or post in an existing one.

By doing the classic newbish "j00 guys are retarted de erf is rownd!!11eleventy" opening followed by a wall of text which goes on in great detail about his amazing observations (which surely no-one has brought up already) he instantly failed.  I'm not here to tell you that's fair, or just, or whatever, but it is a fact.  You and him both need to deal with it.

Since you'll ignore that anyway, this is what you need to do if you want an effective debate:

1) search for a thread on the topic already
2) if not found, start a new thread keeping it to the point and brief
3) don't be a twat
4) don't mass-insult the entire site and expect civil discussion to result

Off you go.

This is a valid thread, with one side putting across decent points, withg factual evidence, and the other side simply replying by saying "we've discussed this already".

So again, i put it to you, to combat my original comments.
